Not all dogs are kid friendly so choose wisely and research the breed first before making a big mistake.

A new puppy can make a perfect addition to your family for many reasons. Not only are lasting bonds made between dogs and their owners but they can also make your home more secure (deterring burglars). Dog owners tend to lead healthier lifestyles, stronger immune systems and lower stress levels. There’s no denying that a dog can keep you fit but studies have shown that children that own dogs are less likely to have days off school.

Larger dogs actually tend to make better pets where children are concerned. Some small dog breeds are not able to put up with some of the abuse that kids throw at them. Constant handling can cause them to feel threatened and more likely to bit or nip back. Larger breeds are more capable in this respect and less likely to feel threatened.

For that reason I should point out that this article concerns breeds that are kid friendly which isn’t to imply that children are capable of caring for these animals on their own. Many in this list are large active dogs that require an adults strength to control them when they get over excited.

To help you in your search we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 canines that get along with children. There’s no particular order of friendliness and each dog has it’s own unique personality but as breeds go these are the friendliest ones.

Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are beautiful dogs, both in looks and nature and honestly who can resist those gorgeous eyes?

Originally bred as hunting dogs, to retrieve waterfowl ,they are loyal, obedient and one of the most popular breeds around. Due to their sporting heritage they are lively animals and do require plenty of exercise so prepare to put on your running shoes when you take them out.

These intelligent dogs are very social and thrive in human company. Being a large breed with a relatively long coat they do shed often will require a fair amount of grooming, once or twice a week.

While they love playing outside they are more passive and calm once inside the house and make great companions for children.

Boxers

These hunky sacks of lovable muscle are not only loyal and intelligent but are very playful and make great companions.

These are medium sized dogs weighing in at around 70 lbs (35kg) and although giving the appearance of being strong and aloof they are very sociable and occasionally goofy (some may say clownish).

It’s true that they can be a little headstrong at times so harsh training doesn’t work well with them, but they are very obedient.

They are known to get on well with kids and even other animals so if you have other animals such as cats or dogs then you shouldn’t have any issues.

With a short coat minimal grooming is required, just the occasional rub down. Boxers are not really an outdoors kind of dog for two reasons. The short hair means that they have problems keeping warm in very cold weather and their short noses means that they can have issues cooling off in summer. Good news is that this makes them great house dogs.

Boxers are very social animals and you’ll find that they love to lie as close to you as possible which is fine if you don’t mind them occasionally drooling on your leg.

American Stafford Terriers

American Stafford Terrier are not what some may consider a child friendly dog, the short hair, muscular frame and in-your-face stare may put a lot of people off but looks can be deceiving. This breed is fiercely loyal towards people when correctly integrated into a family.

While sweet-natured with family their fighting ancestry means that they do not take lightly to being confronted by other dogs and won’t take any nonsense from strangers. Bad news for any burglars thinking to make a quick score on your house, good news if you want to protect your family.

This once popular breed has been seen dropping down the ranks recently due to some bad rep from certain publicized incidents involving irresponsible pet owners and poor training. This is not an issue if your Am Staff has been brought up in a positive loving environment.

Training is very important in the early years for these animals. They need extensive socializing and a confident owner to let them know who the boss is.

One downside to having an American Stafford Terrier is that they do not play well with other animals so if you have existing pets then you may want to look elsewhere.

This muscular breed requires moderate exercise to keep in interested and stop them chewing on your slippers.

With short hair you won’t have to do much grooming, just the occasional brush off while you’re out chasing squirrels.

Mastiffs

Who couldn’t love those wrinkles. The imposing Mastiff is another large and powerful short haired breed. The muscular body and wrinkled forehead hints at a history of fighting but these modern day warriors at more at home on your living room floor than in the bull pen.

A Mastiff is considered a dignified and good-natured dog that has shed the violent ancient past that they were originally bred for. Nowadays they are more well known for eating you out of house and home and drooling on everything in sight.

These are not the most active of breeds but they do like long walks.

Like the American Stafford Terrier it’s important that they get adequate training early on in life and shown how to socialize but they are a tolerant breed and make great guardians for your kids.

Although a fully grown adult can outweigh most men they remain gentle beasts that appear to sense that children are fragile, treating them as puppies instead. That’s not to say that a swing of their ever-wagging tail won’t accidentally knock a small child over.

On average a Mastiff will live up to 10 years.

Dalmations

The Dalmatian, with its unforgettable spotted coat, is a sleek fun loving animal that is easily recognizable. This large dog is good-natured and very intelligent. Immortalized in the famous Disney movie 101 Dalmations most people find that one is more than enough.

These are active agile dogs that need plenty of exercise so take a Frisbee if you don’t want to be running around all afternoon. They love games.

With a lifespan of around 15 years these are considered a relatively healthy breed. They do need proper training early on in life to avoid issues later on and establish the ground rules.

A word of warning though, deafness is an issue in this breed with up to a quarter being born with hearing in one ear only and some even completely deaf. So if you’re thinking of buying one then have its hearing checked first otherwise you may have problems training them otherwise.

Looking to buy a new dog for your home and want to make sure that it will play nice with the kids?
