Dog Treadmills

Dog treadmills are not the same as the ones that you and me use for exercising. Your dog requires a treadmill with a longer running belt and slower speeds than that used by humans so that they can move to the full extent of their limbs. Many dog treadmills are wider as well so as to allow your canine friend to move more freely.

Whereas regular treadmills expose the motor so that air can cool it, dog treadmills do not. Dog hair can quickly become stuck inside the motor and cause it to overheat and become a fire hazard which is why the motors in pet treadmills tends to be enclosed to prevent this.

If you have a small dog then a wheel may be more convenient than a full blown treadmill.

Dog Treadmills vs Human Treadmills

Here are the main differences between human and dog treadmills.

Dog treadmills are normally:

  • wider
  • longer
  • have enclosed motors
  • have slower speed ranges
  • no side handles
  • open at the ends
  • quieter
  • safer

So while it may seem like a good idea to take your dog for 'walkies' on your expensive treadmill it may not be the safest thing to do. Buying a good quality dog treadmill that will last for years is a wise choice.
